2017 LSM One Health Campaign #5 (03-11-2017) : All you should know about antimicrobial resistant - final episode!

2017-11-03

3 rd November 2017 is the second One Health Day. LSM Laboratory will continue its last episode video series on "All you should know about antimicrobial resistance" as a round up of the LSM One Health Campaign 2017. This doesn't mean all are finished. Instead, we hope everybody will start to practise One Health concept in our daily life to fight against antimicrobial resistant problem as well as to build a better health world!

Multidrug resistant bacteria can be found all over the world?

Yes, most if not all. Please refer to a WHO report issued in 2014 to learn more about the statistical figures. http://www.who.int/drugresistance/documents/surveillancereport/en/

Multidrug resistant bacteria can only be found on human body?

No. Bacteria are everywhere! Study had shown that toilet area, hospital ward and keyboards are at high risk of MDR bacteria transmission.

Ther are no treatment on multidrug resistant bacteria?

Theoretically, as long as there is a remaining effective antimicrobial substance, there is still chance for successful treatment. However, reaction among bacteria, human and antimicrobials are complicated and successful treatment may not be easy. Sometimes combination treatment maybe required for a successful treatment. Early proper treatment helps to reduce mortality due to MDR bacteria so proper use of microbiology laboratory services is valued in minimizing the undesired complication of the patient.

Keeping good personal hygiene is good enough to fight against multidrug resistant bacteria?

Believe me or not, yes! Wash hand frequently and keeping area clean is very effective to stop contacting these bacteria and minimize transmission. So easy that everybody can work together!

Multidrug resistance is only a medical topic?

This is a social problem for sure. MDR bacterial infection lead to longer stay in hospital and longer treatment period. Financial bruden increase for both patient and the Government.

WE work better than physicians to fight against antimicrobial resistance problem?

Everyone is important! Doctor helps in a clinical way or political way. We, however, can contribute every seconds! Keeping good hygiene, aware of the possibility of contacting germs and spreading them, and that is it!

Multidrug resistance means end of the world?

Well, who knows. However we have fact that we can alert ourselves: development of new antimicrobial substances is slow; new MDR bacteria is coming fast; transmission of MDR bacteria is getting quick; de-forest to accommdate expanded human population leads to close contact between wild life and human, thus increase chance of zoonotic disease. Untreatable virus, untreatable MDR bacteria, I believe the next epidemic of infectious disease is there. One Health concept is to protect everyone, let us work together!
